In making art, I aim to channel other realms. These realms are based in (and on) the one we are most familiar with, the one in which we occupy most of our time. I attempt to stretch, tug and finesse my imagery until it exists within a place that is no place, and becomes part of a landscape that is familiar yet elusive.
The fragmented figure often occurs in my imagery. In these pieces lie a glimpse of another side; a part that is not as readily seen with our everyday eyes. For the past few years I have investigated and worked with shadow - as subject, medium and metaphor. Shadows defy time in their ability to simultaneously be present and absent. According to Jungian psychology, the shadow is our subconscious; it is what we have hidden. In addition to acknowledging this archetype, I see the shadow as a reminder of the many faces we wear openly. It is not as simple as dark and light; it is also the things in-between.
Through art making, I explore places which are unmappable, feelings that are unnamable, and instances that might otherwise be forgotten. At the heart of my work lies a fascination with how humans have shaped and created the numerous worlds we occupy. These worlds are a fascinating place.
